Raising The Roof On Literacy

Helping Kids Read And Family Spend Some Quality Time

Literary Initiative

Literacy Is A Critical Community Issue!

Believe it or not, the United States doesn't even rank the in the top 15 nations in their rate of literacy. This was a shocking statistic to become aware of. There are many reason why literacy is critical. Our focus though has been on the literacy of young children. We felt that if we could get kids books, and help model how to read with kids, that this could have a tremendous impact on the future of our kids here in Rome. As you can see by the infographics below, this is a very important skill to have. So, we began to plan how to work towards better literacy here in Rome.

The Rome Lions Club has gotten over 1,000 books (and counting) in the hands of kids through our initiative!

Help Us Get More

Books For Kids!

We Are Holding A Fundraiser To Help Kids Reach Their Future!

We strongly believe that giving kids the opportunity to read a book helps them to develop skills for success in life. From developing vocabulary, to their imagination, to verbal skills, and helps them grow in so many other ways. But we need your help to ensure that we can keep getting books into kid's hands. Would you consider donating any amount to our campaign to help us make that happen? The fundraiser is open until December 31, 2020. Let's give our kids the best chance possible to reach their dreams!

Here Are Just Some Examples Of How We Are Getting Goals Accomplished

Sundaes on Tuesdays

This popular program takes place on Tuesdays during the summer. We pick a couple of stories to read to all the kids, between books they get an ice cream sundae and a free book. Then we read a second book for them. It's been growing in popularity as we continue to hold the program. We are hoping that by holding these sessions that kids are associating positive feelings with reading and looking forward to their next story.

Staley School Book Opportunity

We had the opportunity to join in on a school program so we brought some books and not only did we give them away, but some of the older kids even joined in to read some to the other kids! It was a great night and we gave away several books!

Trick or Treat Street 2020

Due to COVID, we've had to punt a little. When we heard that the RACC was going to have this event to help kids get some sort of trick or treating experience, we asked if we could participate. Over both nights we gave out over 150 books to kids!
